Citing External Sources (Please Read Carefully)
An important part of writing a paper (as well as developing presentations) is giving
credit to external sources used. In many cases, failure to cite external sources may
result in a paper being considered not in compliance with the Academic Dishonesty
Policy described earlier in this syllabus. That is, the paper could be cited as
plagiarized. Please be sure you are familiar with UMD’s Academic Dishonest
policy. Please see the APA manual for complete details. However, these are brief
guidelines of which sources must be cited:
Material from another source used word-for-word (direct quote)
Material from another source with some reworking (revised quote)
Material from another source put into your own wording (paraphrases)
At the very least, failure to cite external sources will be considered a significant
lack of adherence to guidelines and may be subject to penalty. As stated
previously, failure to cite sources may also have more serious consequences,
particularly if I consider the use of uncited sources as involving a significant
portion of the content of a submitted assignment.
