Adidas UltraBoost shoes
Adidas started in 1949 in a small German town, with 47 employees. After 70 years of operations, Adidas is in the top 100 of Interbrand’s “Best Global Brands’.
Adidas claims that sustainability is a big part of its business strategy. Deeply rooted in the company’s core belief that sport has the power to change lives. This informs a strategy that has translated sustainable actions into tangible goals around the world. For example, in 2016, Adidas eliminated plastic bags in its 2900 stores.
According to CEO, Kasper Rorsted, Adidas sold a million pairs of shoes made from marine plastic (plastic waste in the ocean) in 2017. This plastic is one of the major threats to the health of the world’s oceans. Adidas has found a smart way to use recycling to its (and the planet’s) benefit and, in 2017, it introduced 3 versions of the ‘UltraBoost’ shoe. On average each pair uses 11 plastic bottles, and incorporates recycled plastic into the laces, heel webbing and lining, and sock covers.
