The French abortion pill RU-486, brand named Mifeprex (mifepristone), was approved by the FDA in September 2000 as a prescription drug. It became the first drug approved by the FDA for the sole purpose of abortion after more than a decade of debate about whether or not it should be available to American women as an option for early termination of pregnancy.
Since the approval of Mifeprex, the FDA has received several reports of deaths in the United States following medical abortion with Mifeprex (as of December 31, 2018), including two deaths from ectopic pregnancy which is a pregnancy outside the uterus, and eight deaths from sepsis which is a severe illness caused by overwhelming infection of the bloodstream by toxin-producing bacteria (sepsis is a known risk related to any type of abortion). Mifeprex has a black box warning to make certain that the health care providers inform the patients about risks of serious and sometimes fatal infections or bleeding.
The abortion pill, a very controversial drug first used in France and now approved for use in approximately 60 countries including the U.S., has been sparking debates in the U.S. ever since it was discovered in 1980. Many argue that this drug will mainstream abortion and that women considering it aren’t fully informed of the significant risks involved. However, others believe the approval of RU-486 is a positive decision and can greatly benefit women and provide women with a safe and effective non-surgical option for ending early pregnancy, and millions of women worldwide have safely used RU486 to end their pregnancies.
