Due on 7 July, the short essay will be an analysis of one of several poems covered during our first week of the course. More than just an explanation of the poem’s literal meaning, your essay will choose one major literary device introduced during the first week and argue how your chosen poem uses the device to create meaning through comparison. A list each of eligible poems and devices appears below. Word count: 500-600, excluding quotations and citations.
Eligible texts: David Diop, “Africa”; Seamus Heaney, “Digging”; Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, “I Am Graffiti”; T.S. Eliot, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”
Eligible devices: metaphor, simile, juxtaposition, bathos, defamiliarization
