Instead of discussing ethos, pathos, and logos, you will try to determine a theme of a novel by discussing one of the following literary elements: characterization, setting, point of view, or symbolism. Remember that a literary analysis is not a summary of the plot of a story but an examination of its literary elements and how those elements develop the theme of the work. Always write as though your audience has already read the story. They don’t need the plot told to them. Your thesis statement should look something like: The author uses _________ to demonstrate _________. The first blank would be whichever literary element you choose to discuss and the second blank should be whatever moral lesson, insight into human nature, or social critique that you think is operating as the theme of the story.
For Writing Project #4, do a literary analysis of one of the following contemporary short stories:
“Anaheim” by Jennifer Croft
“Sing a Song of Sixpence” by Minyoung Lee
The paper should be written with the following guidelines:
* The paper should be 3-4 pages in length;
* The paper should be formatted according to MLA guidelines (12 pt. Times New Roman font);
* The paper should contain a Works Cited list (the only work you will likely be citing is the story itself.)
